One of the perks of having friends who build bitchin bikes is being the first in line to photograph them. When John asked me to shoot his bike for Street Chopper my answer was automatic. "When do you want to do it." I would be crazy not to shoot his bike. When Jeff Holt said he wanted to put it on the cover I was even more excited and nervous all the same. I needed to nail a shot that was cover worthy and that is not easy, but in the end everything worked out and I was happy with the outcome. Thank you John for asking me to shoot it, Jeff Holt for wanting to publish my work and the lovely Fawn for riding on the bike to get the shot. Here are a few pictures that were in the feature and few that were not. Enjoy.

Got back from Hawaii yesterday. A full week of shooting photos in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Always enjoy my time on the North Shore but now it's back to work and get back to shooting motorcycles.

The waves were constantly on this past week along the North Shore with a whole lot of barreling going on. Cheyne Magnusson got more than his share of them.

Waited all day for Jamie to paddle out at Pipe so I could get some shots. At the end of the day he paddles out, but with 2 boards. He would paddle on both boards, get into the wave and then switch boards and go Backdoor. He did it a few times with success and this one he just couldn't make it out of the wave. I have a hard time surfing on one board let alone 2.

Spending the week in Hawaii on the North Shore shooting some surfing for the week. Spent all day on the beach today getting a few shots to work with. More to come tomorrow. Got a sequence shot of Jamie O'Brien trying something new and different at Backdoor today as well. Word in the line up is that Wednesday is supposed to be the day that will be the best of the season. Sun is out and the surf is pumping. Looking forward to shooting more surf throughout the week.

A while back now I sat down with Pac Man at a sandwich shop down in Venice and we talked about his life, influences and how he started pinstriping. I plan to make it the next Joyrides Showcase, but it's been so long that he has some new developments in his life that I need to add to the story. Anyways, I'm off to Hawaii for a photoshoot. I will post photos from the North Shore during the week. Hopefully the waves are still big while I'm there.

I was out in Ventura today. Drove up there to see Kurt Morrow. I was introduced to him a few years back at the Born Free 2 show by Alan Braff. Alan had his Triumph worked on by Kurt and told me I should come down and shoot with him. Well finally after a few years of wanting to shoot with Kurt I finally made my way down there. I shot a few bikes he had at the shop and plan to edit photos this week. Stay tuned.

There was a lot going on this past weekend. One of my stops was to the David Mann show in Ventura. A pretty good turn out and the weather was nice. Started out cold and windy but turned out to be a pretty nice day. Along with tons of bikes to look at it was great to talk to Barry Lacour of Top Shelf Customs, Kurt Morrow of Morrow Vintage Customs, Alan Braff, Caleb of Cro Customs, Paul Whitehurst, Jeff Leighton, Rene Astengo of Dago's Speed Shop, Jeff Goo, Nate and Pac Man. Wearing Beanies While Riding Hazards

If you like to ride your motorcycle while wearing beanies you may want to attach a chin strap on them so they don't fly off while riding. Here's a little sequence shot of Grant loosing his favorite beanie while shooting some shots with me on Saturday.

Here we have in sequence 1 you can see in the highlighted red circle the beanie loosing it's grip on Grant's head as the pressure from the on coming wind and his forward motion pushing it backwards. Due to Grant's will and professionalism he kept riding so I could get the shot.

Sequence 2 the force from the wind and the speed of his motorcycle the beanie just couldn't keep it's grip on his skull. Therefore as you can see from Grant's cat like reflexes wasn't good enough to catch the falling prized beanie. The beanie instead of falling back and on to the ground decided to be like a Japanese Kamikaze fighter pilot. If it's going down it's going to take something out with it. It fell straight down and into his chain and locked his rear wheel up and sent him into a long skid.

After a few long minutes of jarring the bike back and forth he was able to get the beanie to loosen it's death grip and get the bike moving again.

Beanie with chin straps. Could be onto something. May save someone's life one day. Till then, all you beanie riders out there. Be safe. Secure your beanie before you ride.

Just got my copies of the 2 recent Flywheels magazine straight from the land of the rising sun.

Issue #14 Dec 2011-Cyaneyed 49 Chevy Styleline built by Jimmy White of Circle City Hot Rods for Chris Broders. This photoshoot was a hard one to get done. Jimmy White was trying his best to make it happen for me and we got it done right up to their last minute deadline. Harpoon was a big help at the shoot as well being my driver so I could get the driving shots of the car. Harpoon and I plan to get posters made of the photos from this shoot and he is taking them to Japan for the Mooneyes show to sell. It will be available here in the states as well. If you don't know by now, Harpoon is the one who painted the car.

Always a pleasure to shoot with Edgar Hernandez when I get a chance. Edgar is the owner of Starlight Rod and Custom in Torrance. They build some of the best looking cars I've seen. Here is Edgar's personal ride I shot for Flywheel Issue #13 Oct 2011.

Cruising around G-Town

I was out in Gardena today doing a press check for some screen printing items for our Japan office. I had to head over to Hawthorne to watch my daughters Volleyball game later, but I had some time to kill so I cruised around the old neighborhood. I lived in Gardena from when I was born to 1977 and then the family moved over to Torrance. I had a great childhood growning up as I was able to wander around the area and later in life when I got my license we hung out in various areas of G-Town.

Some hoodies I had to approve at the screen printers.

The bell at the Gardena Buddist church. I spend a couple of years there going to Japanese school after regular school. They also had carnivals there for Obon during the summers where a lot of guys would cruise their cars around the church. I've gone to a few carnivals lately and I don't see the fixed up Jap cars or the cruising anymore. This church was also burned down twice years ago and now has a iron gate surrounding the whole area.

The corner market I used to stop in and get candy on my way home from school.

Train tracks I used to cut across at. My brother and I would stop and put little rocks or pennies on the tracks and watch the trains come by and crush the rocks and smash the pennies. Good times with my bro.

The playground of my kindergarten school.

My elementary school I went to up until the 3rd grade before we moved to Torrance.

Pacific Square. As teenagers we hung out here and this was a big gathering spot for street racing. Every Saturday and Friday night the parking lot here would be pack with guys hanging out setting up races and placing their bets.

Lastly on my way out of Gardena on Redondo Beach and Gramercy is the place I went to Preschool. My first memory of being creative was posting up on the cement walk way just outside my class room and being handed a bowl of water and a paint brush. For some reason I always remember that.

Did a photoshoot on Saturday with Chris Broders the owner of this 49 Chevy Styleline Deluxe. I am shooting it for a upcoming feature in Flywheels magazine. Harpoon showed up and was able to help me out with some driving shots and I also snapped off some shots of him with the car. For those who don't know who Harpoon is, he is the one who painted this car and has done so many other cars and bikes that you probably have seen in the mags but just didn't know it was him behind the paint.
